Why will the Mission help NASA Scientists?
The reason why NASA is doing the MMS mission is because they want to study space weather more deeply. The study of space weather is called Heliophysics. Space weather is important because it affects power lines, electric power grids, and it contributes to the corrosion of oil and gas pipelines. Space weather can also mess with radio communications, satellite damage, and GPS navigations. This mission will use 4 spacecrafts to study magnetic reconnection. The data will see if reconnection is happening in one small spot, everywhere within a large area, or traveling across space. The goal is to help predict space weather forecasting.
